Photojournalism assignment: James Farnum

James Farnum is a New Orleans-based chef whose culinary journey has included kitchens such as Restaurant August, La Petite Grocery, and Emeril’s. Today, he brings his creative vision to life through independent pop-ups like @toussaint_nola and @honeybabynola, serving dishes that blend classical technique with deep local roots.

This photo series was created during a four-day visual storytelling workshop led by photojournalists Daniela Zalcman and Natalie Keyssar in New Orleans. Supported in part by the CatchLight Impact Fund, the program is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and transparency within the photography industry.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Over the course of three days, I spent time documenting James Farnum is an accomplished chef, Food Network competitor, and culinary-trained pastry artist. The son of a military family, James developed a global palate while living in Germany and France, influences that now inform his approach to New Orleans cuisine.

What struck me most was James’s deep authenticity and relentless dedication to his craft. He described himself as someone with a “beer budget and champagne taste,” a phrase that perfectly captures his philosophy: creating elevated, thoughtful food while staying grounded in community and accessibility.

After stepping away from traditional executive chef roles, James chose to forge his own path through pop-ups and personal ventures. His connection to New Orleans a city he says “chooses you” runs deep, and so does his belief that opportunity is something you build, not wait for. His ultimate dream is to open a restaurant of his own, rooted in everything he’s learned and loves.
